TRURO VINEYARDS OF CAPE COD ACQUIRED
Roberts family has deep roots in Truro, long history in the wine business
Truro, Massachusetts – Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod, one of the largest wineries in Massachusetts and Cape Cod's only traditional European grape-growing vineyard, has been purchased by the family of Dave Roberts, beverage industry consultant and former CEO of United Liquors in Braintree, Mass. "We are all very proud and excited to be part of historic Cape Cod," Roberts said. Founders Kathy Gregrow and Judy Wimer "have created a wonderful wine country experience here in North Truro. We plan simply to enhance what they have already done so well," he added.
Roberts and his family have signed Truro wine maker Matyas Vogel to a contract extension. Vogel studied viticulture and oenology in his native Hungary and joined the winery in 2004.
Truro Vineyards is located near the intersection of Route 6 and Route 6A, the Cape's two main thoroughfares. The almost 200 year-old farm house was the subject of Edward Hopper's famous 1930 painting "Rich's House." The winery, featuring a newly renovated gift shop, is open for tours and tastings on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in April, and seven days a week beginning in May. Truro Vineyards produces about 7,000 cases of wine a year, most of which is sold at the winery. It is also available at select fine wine shops and restaurants throughout Massachusetts.
The Roberts family will be hands-on owners with Dave and his wife Kathy Roberts as the general managers. Their son David Roberts, Jr. – formerly a successful brewer in Atlanta, Ga. – will assist with vineyard management and wine making. Daughter-in-law Amy Roberts is in charge of finance and administration. Their daughter Kristen Roberts is responsible for sales and marketing, and another daughter Stephanie Roberts Hartung, a professor at Suffolk University Law School, is also an owner.
"Our family has very deep roots in both Truro and the fine wine business that go back over 40 years," Roberts said, "which makes this a perfect acquisition. We've dreamed of owning and operating a vineyard together for years, and that dream has finally come true."
